What is Ecologic ?

Ecologic is the bio-integration of natural systems into our built environment. Our personal and environmental health depends on the availability of clean air, water and soil.

Ecomimicry

Ecomimicry is a term used for the study and analysis of site specific ecological functions which purify and process waste and nutrients in a biological fashion. In fact, closer study reveals that the processes we want to install in our buildings are analogous to the functions that the native ecology would perform given the chance to do so water purification, air purification, decomposition of nutrients into fertilizers. Healthy ecologies evolve on the basis of there being no such thing as waste. Humans account for only 1 percent of the earth’s biomass but are responsible for 99 percent of all the earth’s pollution. and cover 8 per cent of the biosphere’s land surface with their built environment. This was not the case some 200 years ago when humans were able to process their waste as it was organic and biodegradable.

The following graph illustrates the increasing levels of pollution our civilized world has been generating over the last 20 years and the related rise in population.

So why not let nature do what it has been ‘designed’ to do ?

With ecomimicry we can design resident ecological functions into our built environment with bio-filtration, decomposition, building for deconstruction, life cycle analysis, natural building, natural day lighting and natural ventilation.

The Ecologic Design Lab focuses on creating this integration by using ecomimicry to eliminate the concept of waste in our built environment. This is done by a process involving the following steps :

  1. Ecologic Analog : Careful analysis of the resident ecologies
  2. Ecologic Functions : A qualification and quantification of the functions that occur in this ecology
  3. Ecomimetic Applications : Design that mimics and integrates these ecologic functions into the structure of buildings
  4. Ecologic Intelligence : Cultivate these living systems by monitoring and maintaining these systems in perpetuity
